Voidsent Lore
The Voidsents are beings that have existed since the dawn of time in a dimension different from our own. Human in life, the Voidsent exist as twisted and tortured souls in what some might call “purgatory” - trapped within the space between the natural world and the other side. As time passed in the Void, these souls changed to something far from human, transforming into something all their own. Natural time doesn’t exist in the Void, so it’s hard to say how long the typical Voidsent spent there, but it was long enough to forget most traces of their former self.
For the strongest amongst them, a chance to escape would present itself on the occasion that a dying human prayed to a higher being, opening a small ripple into their home dimension for a single soul to escape. The lucky soul would then take over the dying host's body, shoving the human soul to the side to take complete control over their host’s body while maintaining communication through a connection with the still-living soul. They also may get flashes of memories from the human soul as the Voidsent tries to take over.
Bellamy's test on Bella created a dimensional rift that left an opening between the worlds, giving the Voidsents easier access to the natural world. Many spirits rushed to try and escape at Bella’s initial call with one soul, Azura, claiming the Magi’s body. In life, Azura had been a strong warrior who led a fighting force before being cut down in battle. She attempted to escape a handful of times; however, after years of Bellamy Labs keeping their prized Magi under lock and key, the security surrounding her host was air-tight. After realizing the futility, the voidsent spiraled, horrified by the acts of the humans that surrounded them. Thus, the being gathered their strength and waited for the right time to strike, punish their captors, and release their fellow prisoners. Anyone who tried to intervene was quickly taken down by the warrior including the facility itself in a Voidfire blaze, transforming the labs into an echo of the battlegrounds of her past. She made her way through the building unaffected by her own power, releasing any cages or cells she could find to give each being a fair chance at survival. Azura escaped into the secluded forestry of the island, determined to take back her rule. With the Void open, all she had to do was take leadership over the souls who came through.
The number of Voidsents in the mortal realm began booming due to the many lives destroyed by the fire and the need to congregate became a necessity, especially when it seemed they had enemies nearby. About a week after Azura took her vessel, a group of three Magi came to try and take it back from her. They were not so lucky, and one of those magi lost their own life in the struggle. The Ethereal was technically formed by Azura, to get the army she longed for. All souls that escaped the Void had two options - become part of her army or die. Many knew of Azura and her power, so most fell under her leadership without contest and those that didn’t were publicly struck down. Her ultimate goal was to create an army the world had yet to see, and it began with taking the island for themselves. The Voidsents became feared by many of the other supernaturals on the island. They were viewed as heartless, cruel fighters – much to their leaders' delight.
Not long after Azura's army was well established, she met her final demise at the hands of a Hunter. The army disbanded, and an Alliance grew in its place. Cain, one of Azura’s first disciples, took leadership over the congregation who chose to stay and created what is known now as the ‘Ethereal’ Alliance. Though no longer an army, Azura's tactics and mindset are still taught within. Strength and loyalty by all costs are the Ethereals core principles. With the harsh ways of forcing Voidsents into allegiance, far behind them. Over the years, leadership has changed frequently, along with their overall vision. The Alliance now focuses on giving their own a place of belonging in this new world, and providing aid when needed. Some of the islanders might say these beings have softened, perhaps they found a sense of ‘humanity’... or maybe they just got better at blending in.
